Lil will always be remembered for her breath takingly beautiful serene gardens and her yummy goodies she would lovingly bake for what ever event there was at the Neighborhood house. I especially loved her ginger bread and her pecan pie. She gave me a secret to her pecan pie one year, and when ever I make it I know it is the best because of that secret that most don't know about. Peace be with the family left behind knowing she is in Gods hands now and has made a fondly memorable mark on those, friends and family left behind. Name: Jeanette (Hadlock) Gaspie Email: hadlock_limited@hotmail.com Location: Hancock Date: July 16, 2009 Comments: My sincerest condolences go out to Joy, Juanita and their families on this great heart felt loss...their beloved Mother, Betty Sprague. There is one elder that is constant on my mind whenever I think of Islesford, and that is Betty. Right from her "southern Maine-iac" accent to her silly carefree attitude. She was the island sunshine. She was like an Islesford icon. She used to call me Jinnynet. It always brought a smile to my face. She was my Sunday School teacher when I was little. If it was not for her I don't think I would have been as adamant on getting my kids into Sunday School when they were young. I wanted them to share that same enjoyment for learning about Jesus that she instilled in me. I even brought them to Islesford from time to time so they could see the excitement in her eyes as she shared her love for teaching Sunday School. When there was a dance around there was always Betty. When there was no one to dance with there was always Betty to drag ya out there. She could always bring a smile to ya, no mater what kind of mood you were in. She will always remain very dear to my heart and forever fondly remembered. I love you Betty and you will be greatly missed!! Name: Sandy Leith Email: sandy.leith@rbc.com Location: Dedham, MA Date: May 10, 2009 Comments: A few years ago, I posted a piece about the 1929 Model A Ford woody wagon that used to sit in a field not far from the town dock. It was moldering away when I shot the lost photos in 1969 and a relative of the owner contacted me about the poor doomed car. Well, this past weekend, I found the two original negatives and I have had photos printed, so I can now send email copies, if she will get back in touch with me. I remembered (incorrectly) the owners name as something like Charles Helbit, or Hurlbet and the car was in the field directly across from the beautiful Hupmobile sedan which was far better cared for! If someone can tell me how to post them on this site, I'd be delighted to... I'd also love to know whatever happened to the poor car. It was losing its battle with the elements, 40 years ago and I am sure, sadly, it is no more. Is there a room or space in your house, basement, garage, shed, studio, or friends house that could be converted to studio space? Ideally the space should have: Heat (though I have a monitor heater that I could hook up if needed) Insulation (I could insulate a space if needed) ElectricityWater (I could manage without running water if that’s the case)Natural light (would be nice) An outdoor access would be good too. I keep a clean studio and could be fully moved out by mid-May. Thanks for considering it! We have subsequently heard that some of our summer neighbors were disappointed with our decision. Our goal is to serve our community, and as such, we are willing to hold a supper on Columbus Day weekend this year, but in order to do so we need your help.To host a dinner for 150 people, 20-30 volunteers are needed to help organize, set up, cook and clean up. If we get the number of volunteers we need to pull off a dinner, we will hold Harvest Supper on Columbus Day weekend. If not, we will hold an event similar to the one held last year on that weekend. If you are willing to volunteer your time for this event, please contact Bill McGuinness at 244-0460 by September 7th.Thank you,The Islesford Neighborhood House Association Name:Steven Philbrook Email:stevephilbrook@yahooo.com Location:Islesford Date:August 20, 2008 Comments: Steven and Amy's Little House is available for rent the last week of August 24-30 and the first 2 weeks of September. I have already received valuable help from a number of authorities on Mount Desert, but I am hoping that someone whom I haven't yet contacted will have or know of 1) documentary traces of Warren or the TIPS (entries in guestbooks, photographs, letters, etc.); 2) knowledge of Warren or the TIPS that has been handed down orally; and 3) or pictures by Warren of Mount Desert. Also, Warren came to Sutton Island in 1907 before he came to Islesford; he was related to the Burnhams, who owned several houses on Sutton, and I am particularly interested in any traces of his stay there. Hi all. I haven't read the bulletin board in almost a year, so I just found out that Charlie Gifford died. I was very sad to hear that - he was one of the kindest and funniest people. I thought you all might get a kick out of this story: He was introduced to me as 'Rufus' and later I saw someone calling him 'Charlie.' I was puzzled and asked him if I had gotten his name wrong. No, he said - I must have met his twin brother! OK, now it gets good, and I look stupid: he kept this up for the entire part of the summer that he was on Islesford - at that time I think it was a full month! Just as it took a short while to distinguish Robin Fernald from his brother, I imagined I was getting to know the difference between Charlie and Rufus! He'd always play this game of asking him who he was when I saw him; I'd day 'Rufus!' or 'Charlie!' and sometimes he'd say 'Right!' and sometimes, 'No cigar!' It wasn't until I was leaving the island that he told me the truth! We laughed about it for years afterward! Hope you are all well. Mike is doing great in Peru and is very, very happy. He is in San Bartolo, the surfing capital of the southern hemisphere, and where he lives is right on the water. He swims every day. As many of you know he is in formation with a Catholic religious order; we spent time with the Rome branch on our last two trips to that city, and all of them - men and women - are wonderful, intelligent, lively, fantastic people. I have been coming to LCI for the past 17 years ,with my mom, as a 'day tripper' a couple of times each summer, and like so many others I have found it to be a magical place. There is so much that is compelling about the Island and your community. For my senior year independent project I would like to spend 4 or 5 days in February on Little Cranberry Island, interviewing and photographing six or seven year-round residents in order to produce a photo essay that addresses the question: 'Why, in the 21st century, would 70 + people choose to live year-round on a tiny, isolated island, 3 miles off the coast of Maine, only 1 1/2 miles long and 3/4 miles wide?' I don't know anyone on LCI, and was wondering if there might be someone who would be willing to 'host' me, ideally from February 16-20, or any other time in Feb or March that would be convenient. I would be happy to pay room and board (and bring maple syrup produced in my town?) If you are willing to help me in any way, either be willing to be interviewed and photographed, or help me to find a 'host', please email me at: snoble@charlemont.org or write to me at: Sarah Noble-Dziura, 2 Hidden Ledge Drive, Conway, Ma 01341 Thank you. I wanted to check in and say hi! We are back in CT. And pretty sad about it too. My Daughter, Mariah, started school here on Wed., very reluctantly. She was really looking forward to beginning her school year at Islesford School. She has made sure to tell any of her friends here and teachers (pretty much anyone with ears!) all about Islesford - her experiences during our vacation, the new friends she made (Hannah, Sam, Hauni, and Casey), meeting the Islesford teachers (and how 'really cool and nice' they are), and in general that, 'Maine Rocks!' My Son, Gavin, asks me at least once a day since we got back 'where is our boathouse, Mommy?' and 'when are we going back to our boathouse?' As for me, I just want to say that I am seriously considering printing up bumper stickers that read, 'The more I meet people in Ct., the more I want to be with the people of Islesford!' It's just not the same here in rat-race, stressed out Ct., let me tell you! Still working on getting back up there. Blessings to All of You! Don't forget to keep in touch! Of course, the Head was also in the family although I don't beleive I have ever had the honor of even entering the front door. I now have a family of my own but have not yet taken them on the journey to the Island. I am planning on doing so this summer. Name:Kelley Keane-McAlexander Email:kmcalexander@gmail.com Location:ct Date:January 18, 2007 I am a former summertime "resident" of Little Cranberry Island. I spent Summers there from the age of 2 yrs. to 10 yrs. old. I am now 34. Unfortunately, I have been back to visit very sporadically since the age of 10. I have kept in touch with my good friend Ashley Bryan over the years. I love the island, and its people. I miss it alot. I am currently going through a divorce. I live in Connecticut, but I am seriously considering moving. It would be a dream for me to relocate to Islesford. However, my finances are tight. I have two children, a 10 yr. old Daughter (Mariah), and a 3 yr. old Son (Gavin). I would love for them to be able to grow up in such a wonderful place like Little Cranberry Island. So, I was wondering...do you need employees? I have experience working for my Mom's catering business, waitressing, cocktail waitressing, and hostessing. I have no problem washing dishes, cleaning, mopping floors. And yes, I am very happy to "do windows"! If you do not have any jobs available, do you know of any available jobs on the Island?? I have experience in Medical Assisting/Medical Secretarial work, retail, real estate (just passed the course), and even Husbandry/Educational Docent work as a volunteer at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. Are there any small apartments/cottages to rent? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Please feel free to pass this email onto anyone on the Island that you feel may be interested or can give me info. If you need references, you can ask Ashley about me. I also know Mr. Richard Hill. His Daughter, "Sissy", and I were the best of friends when we were little. He might remember me as Rebecca Keane's Daughter or the family who rented Capt. Spurling's Cottage for years. You can also ask Cara Spurling about me and my family. I would have tried to contact her or Ashley, but I am pretty sure they do not get email. I plan to write to Ashley soon. I might try to send a copy of this to Mrs. Sue Hill. I hope to hear from you soon. It was a beautiful cool crisp sunny fall day, and I was so pleased because my brother and his wife from California really enjoyed the leaves, the fine pace of life, watching the lobstermen unload their catch at the dock, and the kindness of one and all whom we interacted with. We were actually trying to find the home of a dear friend of our parents - Betty Hartley. Both of us thought we'd remember her home, but our memories were not up to the task. Our parents went to visit Mrs. Hartley for many years, and we wondered if her family are still Islesford residents. They would remember me by my maiden name - Caroline Boardman. They got off to a rocky start on the first day - Mike having been doing his NOAA internship in Alaska all summer, not sailing! - but in the two races on the second day they were 2nd and 3rd - pretty good, considering that the winner, Wendy Goodwin, is one of the owners of Cape Cod Shipbuilding, builders of the Bull's Eye!
