I wanted to share with the island community the passing of my grandmother, Audrey Fisher, this past Sunday. Audrey has been a pillar of the Islesford community for generations and will be greatly missed. Our family plans on celebrating her life this July with the entire island community, past and present, so please join us. She has been a wonderful influence on many lives and above all else loved passing her summers at her home on Gilley beach.

It may be January but I can smell summer from here! My wife and I were married on 08/05/2000 on Bar Beach so would like to spend the week on Islesford again this year. We have previously stayed at the Braided Rugs Inn and have also rented the "Footnote". I just wanted to share with the Islesford Community that my mom and her partner David are safe and well in Haiti but the situation on the ground is very sad. She's staying in the country for now as she is needed to help coordinate the relief effort. But she's there on a day to day basis as things get sorted out. She and David are both living at the new embassy compound which is thankfully seismic proof. Best, Brendan

We were married in Frances Bartlett’s The Braided Rugs Inn in 2002. We were there in 2007 as Frances was packing up the house after the sale. TD and I would like to swap our beautiful condo on the Gulf on the Island of Venice Beach, Florida for a week or two in July on Little Cranberry. Venice is 30 minutes south of Sarasota on the West Coast of Florida. It is hot in Florida in the summer, so someone may want to fly down in the Fall or Spring. These are marvelous times to be in the Venice Sarasota area. Venice is a beautiful town. It has may cultural experiences and the water is green and refreshing…we kayak all over that area of Florida. The house “swapper’ could use our place in Florida any week (s) except Jan-March of 2010.

The condo Association can be found on the Internet at Bahia Vista Gulf. Ours is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath upstairs with balconies off the kitchen and living room. A view of the Gulf and pool on the Gulf can be seen from the living room balcony and the twin bedroom.

It is a gorgeous setting. We love the Little Cranberry Island and want to be there to celebrate our 8th anniversary this summer.

Happy Thanksgiving to all fellow Islanders! I am thankful for our wonderful community.

It is with a sad heart that I tell you of the death of my brother-in-law John Myers. John was my sister Grace's husband and the father of Johnny and Mollie. He was returning from a boatyard in Hancock Point to his home in Salsbury Cove on Thursday, but never arrived. His body was found this morning on the shores of Bar Harbor. John was an experienced boater and still had his life jacket on when they found him. We still do not know what happened. He spent many years with us on Islesford, we will miss him more than he will ever know.

Cranberry Isles Rescue is offering a CPR/AED class on Monday, August 10th at 1:00 on Suttons Island. A paramedic/firefighter from Bangor is coming to teach these lifesaving skills. Infant, children and adult CPR will be taught as well and Foreign Airway Obstruction (choking) manuvers and AED use. Please call me at 207/266-4074 to sign up or email me.

Josh and I are very sad to hear the news of both Lillian and Betty. We think of our time on the island fondly on a daily basis, especially now that we are raising two young children! Lillian and Betty added so much to the community. We are so very sorry that we won't be able to attend the services tomorrow. Our thoughts are with both families and friends. Peace be with you!

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of two great ladies of Islesford, Lil Alley and Betty Sprague. Lil made the most wonderful Gingerbread. We all come to the Island the Saturday before Memorial to do the cemetary and at lunch time Lil used to show up at my Uncle Harvey's house with the gingerbread and my Aunt Audrey used to try to hide it on us. But somehow someone would find it.... Chuddy, Rick & family, Sue & family, Corey & family - I send my deepest sympathy. Also want to send my sympathy to Joy & Juanita and famillies for the loss of their Mom. she was a wonderful person and all that knew Lil and Betty will miss them dearly.

Once again we have lost one of our cherished island ladies. My condolences to the Alleys and to her island friends.I had worked with Lil cleaning cottages and my favorite part was Tea Time because we always knew Lil had a treat for us. Even when she wasn't working with us she would show up and bring Lena and I goodies and check up on us. She always had a smile and a hug and what kid didn't know that her cookie jar was always full!! I will miss that tender sweet lady.

Just logged onto the site to do my weekly "touching base" with my most favorite island in the World, and was very saddened to learn of Betty's passing and Lil Alley's passing. All of my sympathy and prayers go out to both Families. I am so sorry.

Condolences go out to the family of Lillian Alley. Lil will always be remembered for her breath takingly beautiful serene gardens and her yummy goodies she would lovingly bake for what ever event there was at the Neighborhood house. I especially loved her ginger bread and her pecan pie. She gave me a secret to her pecan pie one year, and when ever I make it I know it is the best because of that secret that most don't know about. Peace be with the family left behind knowing she is in Gods hands now and has made a fondly memorable mark on those, friends and family left behind.

My sincerest condolences go out to Joy, Juanita and their families on this great heart felt loss...their beloved Mother, Betty Sprague. There is one elder that is constant on my mind whenever I think of Islesford, and that is Betty. Right from her "southern Maine-iac" accent to her silly carefree attitude. She was the island sunshine. She was like an Islesford icon. She used to call me Jinnynet. It always brought a smile to my face. She was my Sunday School teacher when I was little. If it was not for her I don't think I would have been as adamant on getting my kids into Sunday School when they were young. I wanted them to share that same enjoyment for learning about Jesus that she instilled in me. I even brought them to Islesford from time to time so they could see the excitement in her eyes as she shared her love for teaching Sunday School. When there was a dance around there was always Betty. When there was no one to dance with there was always Betty to drag ya out there. She could always bring a smile to ya, no mater what kind of mood you were in. She will always remain very dear to my heart and forever fondly remembered. I love you Betty and you will be greatly missed!!

The island community is once again saddened to receive news of the death of life-long Islesford resident Lil Alley.

I am so sorry to hear of Betty's passing. I loved coming to Islesford every summer and seeing Betty. She always greeted you as if you were an old friend she hadn't seen for a long while. She was always cheerful, always smiling and laughing. The island will not be the same without her.

So sad to hear of Betty Spragues passing. She always had a smile for everyone and as a kid growing up on the island we were always guaranteed a dance partner if Betty was around! She will be dearly missed. My condolences to Juanita, Joy and their families. Betty was a great lady.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BETTY!!

A few years ago, I posted a piece about the 1929 Model A Ford woody wagon that used to sit in a field not far from the town dock. It was moldering away when I shot the lost photos in 1969 and a relative of the owner contacted me about the poor doomed car. Well, this past weekend, I found the two original negatives and I have had photos printed, so I can now send email copies, if she will get back in touch with me. I remembered (incorrectly) the owners name as something like Charles Helbit, or Hurlbet and the car was in the field directly across from the beautiful Hupmobile sedan which was far better cared for! If someone can tell me how to post them on this site, I'd be delighted to... I'd also love to know whatever happened to the poor car. It was losing its battle with the elements, 40 years ago and I am sure, sadly, it is no more.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed looking at your website! Some of you may know my mom and great grandmother. My mom is Evelyn (Wallace) Lindsey and my great grandmother was Glen Hadlock. I use to come to the island alot as a child and have enjoyed looking at the pictures on here. My mom has been talking about maybe trying to find a place to stay out there for a few days this summer. I would love to bring my kids out there and let them experience the island as I did when I was young.

As some of you know, Lindsay and I plan to start building our home soon. In fact we have already started, all winter we have been collecting materials for the house on the island from very generous land owners who have given us standing or fallen trees that they don't need. We have decided to purchase a saw mill so we can cut our own lumber and build a timber frame house. We are very excited about this project and want it to be a success! I am still collecting trees and I would love to haul off any unwanted trees, standing or not.

(1) Device to measure energy usage of appliances,
(2) Laser Thermometer to find cold spots,
(3) Energy Audit video made on Islesford with a professor from Unity College and a representative of the New Forest Institute.  Check these out and find out how to stay warmer and be more energy efficient.

Bangor Hydro has scheduled a power outage at Cranberry Isles for Saturday, February 07, 2009, beginning at 11:00 AM, and lasting for at least six hours. Please be prepared for this outage.

Congratulations to Ashley Bryan for receiving the 2009 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award yesterday! (Jan. 26th)

It was announced at the American Library Association's annual meeting, along with other book winners. This award is given to "an author or illustrator, published in the United States, whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children."

It's only given every 2 years, and previous winners have included Dr. Seuss, E.B. White, Beverly Cleary, Eric Carle and Laura Ingalls Wilder, amoung others. We all know how much his contributions, as a whole, have influenced our lives and made them that much better!

My wife Claire & I had the opportunity to visit Islesford for my brother Bob's Phillips wedding to Sarah Mills. My late parents, Doris & Maurice would have been proud to see my brother in a tuxedo. The weather was perfect and the sand beach road was ideal for a wedding. We miss the island, but still enjoy talking to Lill and Chuddy, who were friends of the family for years.

I am sad to report the passing of Nathaniel Bowditch, beloved husband of Lynn, son of Phil and Molly Bowditch and brother to Jean, Stephen and Eleanor on September 4th, after a courageous and dignified year-long battle with multiple myeloma. Nat stopped treatment in early July and had a nearly 8 week period filled with joyful family visits, conversations with many old friends and quiet periods when he picked up his ever present sketch pad to capture a moment or scene. He was able to enjoy the activity of the harbor from his front porch, the beautiful gardens of Prescott Park in Portsmouth and visits with friends and family. Harvest SupperDear Community,Last year, because the Columbus Day Harvest Supper had grown too big to fit in the building or be managed by the handful of volunteers available to help out, the Neighborhood House board decided instead to hold a dessert and dance party that weekend. We have subsequently heard that some of our summer neighbors were disappointed with our decision. Our goal is to serve our community, and as such, we are willing to hold a supper on Columbus Day weekend this year, but in order to do so we need your help.To host a dinner for 150 people, 20-30 volunteers are needed to help organize, set up, cook and clean up. If we get the number of volunteers we need to pull off a dinner, we will hold Harvest Supper on Columbus Day weekend. If not, we will hold an event similar to the one held last year on that weekend. I am preparing a publication about one of the Three Islesford Painters (the TIPS), Harold B. Warren, who first visited Islesford in 1915 and continued to do so almost every summer until he died in 1934. I have already received valuable help from a number of authorities on Mount Desert, but I am hoping that someone whom I haven't yet contacted will have or know of 1) documentary traces of Warren or the TIPS (entries in guestbooks, photographs, letters, etc.); 2) knowledge of Warren or the TIPS that has been handed down orally; and 3) or pictures by Warren of Mount Desert. Also, Warren came to Sutton Island in 1907 before he came to Islesford; he was related to the Burnhams, who owned several houses on Sutton, and I am particularly interested in any traces of his stay there. I have a small mooring in Northeast Harbor available for rent -- boats under 20 feet.

No... It's not right next to the dock... It's located in the very north of the harbor, up near the Asticou. Shallow draft boats only (outboards and centerboard sailboats) because the depth is about 3 feet at low tide.Besides those negatives it's a good safe mooring, new last year.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to let people know that this summer, if there is any interest, I will be available for beginner and intermediate piano lessons. This is my tenth year of taking lessons and playing the piano, and I would be thrilled to be able to pass this on to people on the island of any and all ages. Also, I am also available for tutoring in a variety of subjects. I will be a senior in high school this coming fall, and can tutor kids in any math up through calculus. I would also be able to tutor in English/writing as well as Spanish, up through Spanish 4 (usually the level taken junior year). I will be on the island from June 28th-August 17th. I am a documentary filmmaker in NYC with a strong desire to film Island life and stories. I am directly descended from James Bunker (circa 1628).While this is a personal journey, I would like to know if there are any people who live on the Island who would allow me to stay with them for a short time doing preliminary research.I work in the style of Cinema Verite and studied/apprenticed with Albert Maysles.While I have no funding yet, I plan to use this first trip to LCI and GCI to help write a grant. I live in NYC. Any responses/referrals would be greatly appreciated. It saddens me that so few people still are able to live on these Islands and I would like to help in any way that I can to give voice to the history and the present, to preserve for the future.

Dear Islesford friends,

We had a beautiful memorial service on March 29 for my father, Francis Brooks, in Weston, Massachusetts at the Unitarian church. There were about 200 people there from so many different parts of his and our lives. Two Rachel Field poems ('If Once You Have Slept on an Island' and 'Cranberry Road') were read at the service. If anyone is interested, there is a write-up and photo of my father that can be viewed online at boston.com (The Boston Globe website) and just the write-up is on The Bar Harbor Times website.

My father loved Islesford and spent time there nearly every summer of his entire life. For those who knew him, he was quite the story teller and Islesford figured prominently in his repertoire of stories. They included reminiscences of Frank Bunker, family picnics on Placentia Island, and hiking on Mt. Desert. It's hard to believe he's gone.

Ice storm last night and today. Wind gusts of 60 miles an hour expected by 10:00 A.M. The morning boat was cancelled for Islesford. A layer of ice on everything outside the window. The power has flickered in and out several times this morning. Hunker down!

Love the winter photos. Looks beautiful as we are finally getting our first substantial snow in NYC today.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are having a great time with our 3 month old baby girl - Eleanor. She was born on Nov. 17th - weighing 8 lbs 8 oz and 22 inches long. Everyone was fine at birth and Annabella and Eleanor got to come home about 10 hours after.

It has been a blissful past three months getting to know Eleanor. She has a great sense of humor evidenced by her laughing at our jokes.
