Lowering my prices! I am making one style wreath in small $25 medium $30 and large $35.

This will help by dropping the price and make it easier for you to order, I can still customize any wreath however you want, and I still do garland and centerpieces.

Thank you Tiffany Tate 479-6620. Shipping Available.

He is very skittish but not at all aggressive, and we are really worried about him!I know that the July/August rental turnovers have been taking place over the last week, and we are asking people to keep an eye out for him on their properties, or to let PK or I know of any information at all as to where he could be.

Five year ago we were on our annual 4 days trip to the Maine Coast. We were camp near Schoodic Point north of Bar Harbour. My daughter, Elise 9 year old at that time, throw a bottle in the sea with a message in it. Last week we just receive a letter from Islesford Elementary School. Another Child has found the bottle!!!!! Elise (now 14 year old) was excited, and she has sent back a letter to the school! This year our annual trip is plan on May 21th to 24th and now we are thinking to visit on Saturday your Island! Do you thing that is it possible to meet some of the children with their French teacher even on Saturday? Can we pass a full day on the island with our children and Picnic somewhere and hike in the Island? Is it possible to camp on or near your Island?

Hello,

I am looking for information about several families I remember from my stays in Isleford more than 30 years ago when I was a kid. My wife and I are planning to visit the island in July and I am hoping to make some reconnections.

I remember John Dwelley, the Valdina family and the Parrish family. Are any of them still visitors to or residents of the island? Any information you may have will be greatly appreciated.

She and David are both living at the new embassy compound which is thankfully seismic proof. Best, Brendan

Hello Little Cranberry:

We were married in Frances Bartlett’s The Braided Rugs Inn in 2002. We were there in 2007 as Frances was packing up the house after the sale. TD and I would like to swap our beautiful condo on the Gulf on the Island of Venice Beach, Florida for a week or two in July on Little Cranberry. Venice is 30 minutes south of Sarasota on the West Coast of Florida. It is hot in Florida in the summer, so someone may want to fly down in the Fall or Spring. These are marvelous times to be in the Venice Sarasota area. Venice is a beautiful town. It has may cultural experiences and the water is green and refreshing…we kayak all over that area of Florida. The house “swapper’ could use our place in Florida any week (s) except Jan-March of 2010.

The condo Association can be found on the Internet at Bahia Vista Gulf. Ours is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath upstairs with balconies off the kitchen and living room. A view of the Gulf and pool on the Gulf can be seen from the living room balcony and the twin bedroom.

It is a gorgeous setting. We love the Little Cranberry Island and want to be there to celebrate our 8th anniversary this summer.

It is with a sad heart that I tell you of the death of my brother-in-law John Myers. John was my sister Grace's husband and the father of Johnny and Mollie. He was returning from a boatyard in Hancock Point to his home in Salsbury Cove on Thursday, but never arrived. His body was found this morning on the shores of Bar Harbor. John was an experienced boater and still had his life jacket on when they found him. We still do not know what happened. He spent many years with us on Islesford, we will miss him more than he will ever know.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of two great ladies of Islesford, Lil Alley and Betty Sprague. Lil made the most wonderful Gingerbread. We all come to the Island the Saturday before Memorial to do the cemetary and at lunch time Lil used to show up at my Uncle Harvey's house with the gingerbread and my Aunt Audrey used to try to hide it on us. But somehow someone would find it.... Chuddy, Rick & family, Sue & family, Corey & family - I send my deepest sympathy. Also want to send my sympathy to Joy & Juanita and famillies for the loss of their Mom. she was a wonderful person and all that knew Lil and Betty will miss them dearly.

Condolences go out to the family of Lillian Alley. Lil will always be remembered for her breath takingly beautiful serene gardens and her yummy goodies she would lovingly bake for what ever event there was at the Neighborhood house. I especially loved her ginger bread and her pecan pie. She gave me a secret to her pecan pie one year, and when ever I make it I know it is the best because of that secret that most don't know about. Peace be with the family left behind knowing she is in Gods hands now and has made a fondly memorable mark on those, friends and family left behind.

My sincerest condolences go out to Joy, Juanita and their families on this great heart felt loss...their beloved Mother, Betty Sprague. There is one elder that is constant on my mind whenever I think of Islesford, and that is Betty. Right from her "southern Maine-iac" accent to her silly carefree attitude. She was the island sunshine. She was like an Islesford icon. She used to call me Jinnynet. It always brought a smile to my face. She was my Sunday School teacher when I was little. If it was not for her I don't think I would have been as adamant on getting my kids into Sunday School when they were young. I wanted them to share that same enjoyment for learning about Jesus that she instilled in me. I even brought them to Islesford from time to time so they could see the excitement in her eyes as she shared her love for teaching Sunday School. When there was a dance around there was always Betty. When there was no one to dance with there was always Betty to drag ya out there. She could always bring a smile to ya, no mater what kind of mood you were in. She will always remain very dear to my heart and forever fondly remembered. I love you Betty and you will be greatly missed!!

A few years ago, I posted a piece about the 1929 Model A Ford woody wagon that used to sit in a field not far from the town dock. It was moldering away when I shot the lost photos in 1969 and a relative of the owner contacted me about the poor doomed car. Well, this past weekend, I found the two original negatives and I have had photos printed, so I can now send email copies, if she will get back in touch with me. I remembered (incorrectly) the owners name as something like Charles Helbit, or Hurlbet and the car was in the field directly across from the beautiful Hupmobile sedan which was far better cared for! If someone can tell me how to post them on this site, I'd be delighted to... I'd also love to know whatever happened to the poor car. It was losing its battle with the elements, 40 years ago and I am sure, sadly, it is no more.

Dear Community,

As some of you know, Lindsay and I plan to start building our home soon. In fact we have already started, all winter we have been collecting materials for the house on the island from very generous land owners who have given us standing or fallen trees that they don't need. We have decided to purchase a saw mill so we can cut our own lumber and build a timber frame house. We are very excited about this project and want it to be a success! We secured a copy and found it a beautiful book of Ashley's art, hislife mementoes and Bill McGinniss' exceptional island photographs. I am sure the book will be a sell-out once it hits bookstores AND the Island. The island must be so proud of their distinguished resident.

Congratulations to Ashley Bryan for receiving the 2009 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award yesterday! (Jan. 26th)

It was announced at the American Library Association's annual meeting, along with other book winners. This award is given to "an author or illustrator, published in the United States, whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children."

It's only given every 2 years, and previous winners have included Dr. Seuss, E.B. White, Beverly Cleary, Eric Carle and Laura Ingalls Wilder, amoung others. We all know how much his contributions, as a whole, have influenced our lives and made them that much better!

Thanks, Ashley!!

Dear Friends, I am looking for a studio space on the island to use for the winter (October through May). Is there a room or space in your house, basement, garage, shed, studio, or friends house that could be converted to studio space? Ideally the space should have: Heat (though I have a monitor heater that I could hook up if needed) Insulation (I could insulate a space if needed) ElectricityWater (I could manage without running water if that’s the case)Natural light (would be nice) An outdoor access would be good too. I keep a clean studio and could be fully moved out by mid-May. Thanks for considering it! Kaitlyn

I am sad to report the passing of Nathaniel Bowditch, beloved husband of Lynn, son of Phil and Molly Bowditch and brother to Jean, Stephen and Eleanor on September 4th, after a courageous and dignified year-long battle with multiple myeloma. Nat stopped treatment in early July and had a nearly 8 week period filled with joyful family visits, conversations with many old friends and quiet periods when he picked up his ever present sketch pad to capture a moment or scene. He was able to enjoy the activity of the harbor from his front porch, the beautiful gardens of Prescott Park in Portsmouth and visits with friends and family. He also leaves behind 14 nieces and nephews who adored him and looked to him for so many things. Lynn can be reached at 6 Water Street, Kittery, ME., 03904.We will miss him.

Harvest SupperDear Community,Last year, because the Columbus Day Harvest Supper had grown too big to fit in the building or be managed by the handful of volunteers available to help out, the Neighborhood House board decided instead to hold a dessert and dance party that weekend. We have subsequently heard that some of our summer neighbors were disappointed with our decision. Our goal is to serve our community, and as such, we are willing to hold a supper on Columbus Day weekend this year, but in order to do so we need your help.To host a dinner for 150 people, 20-30 volunteers are needed to help organize, set up, cook and clean up. If we get the number of volunteers we need to pull off a dinner, we will hold Harvest Supper on Columbus Day weekend. If not, we will hold an event similar to the one held last year on that weekend. If you are willing to volunteer your time for this event, please contact Bill McGuinness at 244-0460 by September 7th.Thank you,The Islesford Neighborhood House Association

I am preparing a publication about one of the Three Islesford Painters (the TIPS), Harold B. Warren, who first visited Islesford in 1915 and continued to do so almost every summer until he died in 1934. I have already received valuable help from a number of authorities on Mount Desert, but I am hoping that someone whom I haven't yet contacted will have or know of 1) documentary traces of Warren or the TIPS (entries in guestbooks, photographs, letters, etc.); 2) knowledge of Warren or the TIPS that has been handed down orally; and 3) or pictures by Warren of Mount Desert. Also, Warren came to Sutton Island in 1907 before he came to Islesford; he was related to the Burnhams, who owned several houses on Sutton, and I am particularly interested in any traces of his stay there. Thank you!

I have a small mooring in Northeast Harbor available for rent -- boats under 20 feet.

No... It's not right next to the dock... It's located in the very north of the harbor, up near the Asticou. Shallow draft boats only (outboards and centerboard sailboats) because the depth is about 3 feet at low tide.Besides those negatives it's a good safe mooring, new last year.

Call me at 244-7408 or e-mail at the above if you could use this.

I am a documentary filmmaker in NYC with a strong desire to film Island life and stories. I am directly descended from James Bunker (circa 1628).While this is a personal journey, I would like to know if there are any people who live on the Island who would allow me to stay with them for a short time doing preliminary research.I work in the style of Cinema Verite and studied/apprenticed with Albert Maysles. While I have no funding yet, I plan to use this first trip to LCI and GCI to help write a grant. I live in NYC. Any responses/referrals would be greatly appreciated. It saddens me that so few people still are able to live on these Islands and I would like to help in any way that I can to give voice to the history and the present, to preserve for the future.

Julie's Garden is starting to bloom and looks beautiful as of Memorial Day. We are looking for people to take weekly shifts starting the week of June 30. There is not a lot to do . Your shift includes watering every other day, deadheading and reporting to Karen Smallwood or me if something seems odd and most importantly, to enjoy the time you are there.

Thank you for letting me know if you are available any week in June, July or August to take care of this gem.

Many thanks, Susie McNamee

Good morning,

I realize it is late in the year to be looking for a cottage rental in August but due to unforeseen circumstances I'm just now able to begin my search. My wife and I are looking for a cottage to rent the week of August 3-9, 2008. Its our eighth anniversary; we were married on LCI on August 5, 2000. We would prefer one on the shore, if possible. In the past , we've stayed at the Braided Rugs Inn and also the "Footnote". Last year we discovered Islesboro for a week; in 2006 it was Vinalhaven. If anyone should have a cancellation for this particular week please send me an email or phone 207-989-2547.

Thank-you and have a great summer!

I'd like to give a big thank you to everyone in the community who supported my service trip to the Dominican Republic this year. The trip was a great success in many ways, and it wouldn't have been possible without your love and support!

I'm working on a letter to send out that will describe in more detail how the trip went, but it won't be finished and mailed until after graduation, when I'll have a little more time and a little less stress.... (unfortunately, after postage goes up!)

I'll be home in a few weeks, and I can't wait to see everyone!

Dear Islesford friends,

We had a beautiful memorial service on March 29 for my father, Francis Brooks, in Weston, Massachusetts at the Unitarian church. There were about 200 people there from so many different parts of his and our lives. Two Rachel Field poems ('If Once You Have Slept on an Island' and 'Cranberry Road') were read at the service. If anyone is interested, there is a write-up and photo of my father that can be viewed online at boston.com (The Boston Globe website) and just the write-up is on The Bar Harbor Times website.

My father loved Islesford and spent time there nearly every summer of his entire life. For those who knew him, he was quite the story teller and Islesford figured prominently in his repertoire of stories. They included reminiscences of Frank Bunker, family picnics on Placentia Island, and hiking on Mt. Desert. It's hard to believe he's gone.

Hi all. I haven't read the bulletin board in almost a year, so I just found out that Charlie Gifford died. I was very sad to hear that - he was one of the kindest and funniest people. I thought you all might get a kick out of this story:

He was introduced to me as 'Rufus' and later I saw someone calling him 'Charlie.' I was puzzled and asked him if I had gotten his name wrong. No, he said - I must have met his twin brother! OK, now it gets good, and I look stupid: he kept this up for the entire part of the summer that he was on Islesford - at that time I think it was a full month! Just as it took a short while to distinguish Robin Fernald from his brother, I imagined I was getting to know the difference between Charlie and Rufus! He'd always play this game of asking him who he was when I saw him; I'd day 'Rufus!' or 'Charlie!' and sometimes he'd say 'Right!' and sometimes, 'No cigar!'

It wasn't until I was leaving the island that he told me the truth! We laughed about it for years afterward!

Hope you are all well. Mike is doing great in Peru and is very, very happy. He is in San Bartolo, the surfing capital of the southern hemisphere, and where he lives is right on the water. He swims every day. As many of you know he is in formation with a Catholic religious order; we spent time with the Rome branch on our last two trips to that city, and all of them - men and women - are wonderful, intelligent, lively, fantastic people.

Also, please write if you are interested in a 19 ft American motorboat that is over at Cranberry Boat Yard.

Love to all - Mary Taylor

Love the winter photos. Looks beautiful as we are finally getting our first substantial snow in NYC today.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are having a great time with our 3 month old baby girl - Eleanor. She was born on Nov. 17th - weighing 8 lbs 8 oz and 22 inches long. Everyone was fine at birth and Annabella and Eleanor got to come home about 10 hours after.

It has been a blissful past three months getting to know Eleanor. She has a great sense of humor evidenced by her laughing at our jokes.

Looking forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Hi, my name is Sarah Noble-Dziura, I am 18 years old and live in a little town in western Massachusetts. I have been coming to LCI for the past 17 years ,with my mom, as a 'day tripper' a couple of times each summer, and like so many others I have found it to be a magical place. There is so much that is compelling about the Island and your community.

For my senior year independent project I would like to spend 4 or 5 days in February on Little Cranberry Island, interviewing and photographing six or seven year-round residents in order to produce a photo essay that addresses the question: 'Why, in the 21st century, would 70 + people choose to live year-round on a tiny, isolated island, 3 miles off the coast of Maine, only 1 1/2 miles long and 3/4 miles wide?'

I don't know anyone on LCI, and was wondering if there might be someone who would be willing to 'host' me, ideally from February 16-20, or any other time in Feb or March that would be convenient. I would be happy to pay room and board (and bring maple syrup produced in my town?)

If you are willing to help me in any way, either be willing to be interviewed and photographed, or help me to find a 'host', please email me at: snoble@charlemont.org or write to me at: Sarah Noble-Dziura, 2 Hidden Ledge Drive, Conway, Ma 01341

Thank you.

Hi Everyone. I wanted to check in and say hi! We are back in CT. And pretty sad about it too. My Daughter, Mariah, started school here on Wed., very reluctantly. She was really looking forward to beginning her school year at Islesford School. She has made sure to tell any of her friends here and teachers (pretty much anyone with ears!) all about Islesford - her experiences during our vacation, the new friends she made (Hannah, Sam, Hauni, and Casey), meeting the Islesford teachers (and how 'really cool and nice' they are), and in general that, 'Maine Rocks!' My Son, Gavin, asks me at least once a day since we got back 'where is our boathouse, Mommy?' and 'when are we going back to our boathouse?' As for me, I just want to say that I am seriously considering printing up bumper stickers that read, 'The more I meet people in Ct., the more I want to be with the people of Islesford!' It's just not the same here in rat-race, stressed out Ct., let me tell you! Still working on getting back up there. Blessings to All of You! Don't forget to keep in touch!

Our father, a long time island friend, resident and supporter passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 1, 2007. He was blessed by 60 years of marriage to his wife Molly, who he leaves loved and cared for by numerous family members and friends. She can be reached via mail at:

Molly Bowditch
15 Piper Shore Road
Unit C-302
Scarborough, ME 04074.

Dad spent some of the best times of his life on "the point" and as many of you know felt a special bond with the land, sea and people surrounding and living on the Cranberry Isles. A beautiful service was held this past Friday, August 17, in Cape Elizabeth at St. Alban's Church attended by The Venerable Audrey Delafield and celebrated by family members including his wife, four children, an older brother Nathaniel and grandchildren, friends and past co-workers.

While his passing was expected I know I speak for the family when I say he will be greatly missed. To those of you lucky enough to have known him, please take a moment to walk out to the point sometime, sit on the rest bench and keep him in your thoughts while you relax in the cool space in the forest.

Hello from Belgium!

As many of you know, I have been selected to be a part of the Blue Planet Run (www.blueplanetrun.org), an international team of 20 runners who is running around the clock and around the globe to raise awareness and funds to improve access to safe drinking water.
About the Blue Planet Run: The 2007 Blue Planet Run is covering 15,200 miles, across 16 countries and 4 continents, 24 hours a day for 95 days to deliver an extremely urgent and important message: we can and must address access to safe drinking water to the 1.2 billion people who lack access.. The relay, which will be sponsored by the Dow, is a metaphor for what needs to happen in the water sector – a nonstop marathon-sprint involving the entire international community.

The Route: Since taking off in style on June 1st from the steps of the UN – the team has run over 1,500 miles from New York to Boston, across Ireland, the UK and France. Passing our baton, which carries the message 'Water is Life,' we have personally reached tens of thousands of people in every town and venue we pass through: from the UN headquarters to gas stations along US Rt 1 to small-town festivals to British pubs. You can follow me along the route at blueplanetrun.org and read some of my blog entries at www.blueplanetrun.org/node/96.

Recent Highlights: The trip has been full of unbelievable experiences and events. Some highlights from the past week include:
• A successful launch at the UN with academy award winning actress Hilary Swank;
• An appearance on the Today Show (NBC) and great coverage and interviews on hundreds of international and local media outlets;
• The Sneakers and the City: celebrity designed sneaker statuettes - (Courtney Cox and David Arquette designed a statue in honor of me, on display at the UN). • A great reception at the River Festival in Norwich, CT (June 2);
• Beautiful roads and running paths in New England, Ireland, and the UK (particularly my route through Snowdonia National Park).
• Running through Paris – around the Arch de Triumph, under the Tour Eiffel, and past the Louvre.
• Overwhelming support, interest and compassion - in the most unsuspecting places.

Raising Funds: Because of Dow's sponsorship, 100% of every dollar raised will go directly to high-impact water projects. My personal goal: help raise $1 for each stride. $27.5 million in 95 days.

What YOU Can Do: Achieving this goal will require your involvement. There are a myriad of ways which you can be a part of this adventure. Donate via www.blueplanetrun.org. Host a fundraiser. Volunteer. Attend a hand-off event. Invite at least 10 friends to join us along the route. Mobilize your workplace and staff.

He had been the president of the American Anthropological Association, which has a very nice obituary posted on its website: www.aaanet.org/press/PR20070306.htm

Bill will be buried at the Sturtevant family home in Woods Hole, MA. There will be a memorial celebration of Bill's life and work at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the William C. Sturtevant Memorial Fund at the American Philosophical Society. Checks should be made out to the APS and identified as for the Sturtevant Memorial Fund, and sent to: 104 South 5th St, Philadelphia, PA 19106. Hello again to everyone there on the great island of LCI. I'm currently reading "The Secret Life of Lobsters" by Trevor Corson (family friend Rich Moriarty suggested). A couple chapters in, and I felt I had to check into the Islesford website, and see how the Island and everyone on it is doing!

My divorce was finalized on Feb. 23rd. I'm still living with my two children in my Parents' home here in Monroe, CT. And, I'm still contemplating a move to Islesford... Anybody want to make room for a Islesford- loving lady with two good kids? Has anyone heard of any jobs on the Island, surrounding islands, or the mainland that I can look into? My Bday was in Feb. I'm now 35, and I have experience in many different career fields. I would also be interested in finding a place to rent, preferably on Islesford, but would be interested in places on other islands or the mainland - anything to be near Islesford.

Please don't hesitate to call me (203.331.2237) or email me (kmcalexander@gmail.com) if you hear of any job and/or place to rent! I would be truly interested in hearing about any and all opportunities! I'm currently working nights as part of the waitstaff at a local, upscale banquet hall in order to pay the bills. However, I really need to make up my mind and figure out what my long-term plan is - and soon. I hope all is well there on LCI. I miss the Island and its people so much. I wish all of you the best, always.

I have been accepted as volunteer-in-the-park at Acadia NP. I'll be working at the museum on Islseford. I would like to rent a small cabin that needs some tender loving care, but preferably one with running water. I like your lovely island and would like to experience a summer there with you. Interested in water coloring painting.

I would consider trading homes for the summer. I live in the high country of CO at 10,000ft in a small, cozy 2 bedroon, one floor home two hours from Denver. Please contact for more info.

I caught a glimpse of your island on the Cooking Impossible Show this weekend. Your island looks like a wonderful place!

We live in Washington State in a group of islands called the San Juan Islands. Ours is the closest island to Anacortes ( a 5 minute ferry ride). Our little island of 850 full time residents is serviced by a little county ferry that holds only 22 cars. Our island is maybe somewhat similar to yours. A quaint, wonderful place free of the hustle and bustle of city life. But yet we are less than 2 hours from Seattle.

I would love to visit your island and would like to know if anyone would like to visit ours...maybe trade a 10 day stay??? We have a wonderful cottage right on the salt water. We would be amiable to discuss any opportunities that may be out there. My husband and I would love to visit the island and eat LOTS of lobster.

Warmly, Marla Hovey

On Friday night, my children and I - all Islesford lovers - had dinner at Cafe Gray in New York City and delighted in seeing ´Islesford Lobster´on the menu.

I, too, savored its flavors as memories of dear Lucien and Ashley, the Coop, and so many kind people and unforgettable places washed over me.!

Although I never have been a resident to Ilesford, I feel I have a connection. My great-grandfather was William Otis Sawtelle - founder of the museum. I recall many summers visiting my grandmother, Louise Libby, while she worked in the museum. Of course, the Head was also in the family although I don't beleive I have ever had the honor of even entering the front door. I now have a family of my own but have not yet taken them on the journey to the Island. I am planning on doing so this summer. I am a former summertime "resident" of Little Cranberry Island. I spent Summers there from the age of 2 yrs. to 10 yrs. old. I am now 34. Unfortunately, I have been back to visit very sporadically since the age of 10. I have kept in touch with my good friend Ashley Bryan over the years. I love the island, and its people. I miss it alot. I am currently going through a divorce. I live in Connecticut, but I am seriously considering moving. It would be a dream for me to relocate to Islesford. However, my finances are tight. I have two children, a 10 yr. old Daughter (Mariah), and a 3 yr. old Son (Gavin). I would love for them to be able to grow up in such a wonderful place like Little Cranberry Island. So, I was wondering...do you need employees? I have experience working for my Mom's catering business, waitressing, cocktail waitressing, and hostessing. I have no problem washing dishes, cleaning, mopping floors. And yes, I am very happy to "do windows"! If you do not have any jobs available, do you know of any available jobs on the Island?? I have experience in Medical Assisting/Medical Secretarial work, retail, real estate (just passed the course), and even Husbandry/Educational Docent work as a volunteer at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. Are there any small apartments/cottages to rent? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Please feel free to pass this email onto anyone on the Island that you feel may be interested or can give me info. If you need references, you can ask Ashley about me. I also know Mr. Richard Hill. His Daughter, "Sissy", and I were the best of friends when we were little. He might remember me as Rebecca Keane's Daughter or the family who rented Capt. Spurling's Cottage for years. You can also ask Cara Spurling about me and my family. I would have tried to contact her or Ashley, but I am pretty sure they do not get email. I plan to write to Ashley soon. I might try to send a copy of this to Mrs. Sue Hill.

I hope to hear from you soon. You can reach me at kmcalexander@gmail.com home phone: (203) 261-2669 cellphone: (203) 331-2237

Thank You so much for your time. Sincerely, Kelley Keane-McAlexander

Just a note to let folks know that Virginia (Leighton) Griggs passsed away this past Monday morning. She has lived in Norfolk, VA for a number of years. Older folks there on the Island knew her as Ninny Leighton when she was growing us. Her husband called me on Monday to let me know.

We learned the sad news that a long time summer resident of Islesford, Feliks Gross, died at his home in New York at the age of 100. Feliks and his wife, Preva resided summers in their Islesford home, "Blue Gables". They both spent many hours in academic thought when they were here yet we all learned to know them and marveled at their stories of survival in Poland and then to America during Hitler's march on Jewish intelligencia. Burial will be in New York.

Anybody read "Sweet Swan of Avon:did a woman write Shakespeare?" by Robin P. Williams? There is a copy at the Islesford Library, I hope. Aw, come on, you know Shakespeare didn't write all the good stuff attributed to him. So then the question is: who did? Must have been a woman. Who is Mary Sidney?

Another wonderful book that I presume is in your Islesford Library is the photograph book about the Maypole event this past summer by Sarah Corson and Dick Atlee. Lovely! Everybody had such a wonderful time!

Last Sunday, my brother and I and our spouses had a great visit to Ilesford. It was a beautiful cool crisp sunny fall day, and I was so pleased because my brother and his wife from California really enjoyed the leaves, the fine pace of life, watching the lobstermen unload their catch at the dock, and the kindness of one and all whom we interacted with. We were actually trying to find the home of a dear friend of our parents - Betty Hartley. Both of us thought we'd remember her home, but our memories were not up to the task. Our parents went to visit Mrs. Hartley for many years, and we wondered if her family are still Islesford residents. They would remember me by my maiden name - Caroline Boardman.

Just a note to let people know that the Little Cranberry Yacht Club was well-represented at the Bull's Eye Nationals last weekend. Besides Drew and Kirby Sholl, Mike Taylor (skipper) and Danny Wriggins (crew) were there, and they won a trophy for a 5th place finish overall. They got off to a rocky start on the first day - Mike having been doing his NOAA internship in Alaska all summer, not sailing! - but in the two races on the second day they were 2nd and 3rd - pretty good, considering that the winner, Wendy Goodwin, is one of the owners of Cape Cod Shipbuilding, builders of the Bull's Eye! Southwest Harbor went all out, with a fantastic dinner at the Deck House. All in all, a great place to celebrate Mike's 21st birthday! Special thanks to Danny for being such an awesome crew....Mike says he couldn't have asked for a better partner!

Love to all - The Taylors (to email, leave out the words "no spam")

Just happened to be there this past weekend participating in the Bullseye Nationals out of Southwest Harbor. Kirby was crewing. What a weekend. A little bit of everything weather wise.

Also lost the dingy off the town dock between Saturday morning and Sunday early afternoon. It was a 3 person Puffin with an old Vermont registration sticker on the bow. I would appreciate it if you keep an eye out for her.

Thanks, Drew Sholl

What happened to the old coast guard station on Islesford? At one time, some relatives of mine owned it. Their last name was Bartheld. My parents, a friend, and I stayed with them in the summer of 1963 for a week. It was a beautiful old place, with one problem; it had one bathroom. The bathroom was also used to store firewood, and I think the room was about 20' long. Any information about the place would be welcome.

Hello.

I visited Little Cranberry Island for the first time this summer (August 2006)and was totally enchanted. I am a Waldorf teacher and a writer (woman, 58), and an idea was seeded during my visit to write a novel set on Little Cranberry Island, weaving in and elaborating upon some of the "characters" and stories I heard during the day (only a day!) I was there.

I want to come back for a longer time, at least a month or so no later than next fall, to absorb more of the island, the store, the school, the dock, the roads, and most of all, people.

Where can I stay, not too expensively? Can I volunteer some time in the school if I come, say, in September? Who can I contact at the school to discuss this? Can I have mail forwarded to me there? Is there Internet access? Please email me if you can help with any of these questions!

Thank you. Randi Stein

Folks -- I know there has been some talk of exploring high-speed internet access for Islesford. I just saw a news item about Chebeague Island's efforts in this area. Here is a link to the news coverage:
http://www.wcsh6.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=40462
The IP address of the island's site is www.chebeague.net
The stakes are particularly high for year-round island communities that must continue to attract and retain residents, many of whom may seek the island lifestyle but need high-speed access to support web-based businesses.
Good luck! The 21st Century awaits!
